House Bill 144 as passed the House of Representatives establishes a certification and testing
process for foreign language interpreters administered by the Administrative Office of Courts
(AOC). According to AOC, the one-time cost for testing is $940; the one-time certification fee
for a Spanish exam is $385 ($350 for oral exam and $35 for written exam) and other languages
oral exam is $690. AOC estimates this bill would increase receipts to the State Judicial
Administration Fund by an estimated $2,100 annually, based on projected number of
interpreters to be certified.
