House Bill 333 as introduced would create the Alabama Modified School Calendar Grant
Program to provide grants to local boards of education for planning and implementing a
modified school calendar. This bill also creates the non-reverting Alabama Modified School
Calendar Grant Fund in the State Treasury, subject to appropriations by the Legislature, that
may be spent for the purposes of the program.
This bill would increase the obligations of the Alabama State Department of Education to
administer the program; however, this bill would require the program to be administered with
existing personnel and resources and prohibits contracting for external support. These increased
obligations would be offset, in whole or in part, by the retention of 3% of funds appropriated to
the Alabama Modified School Calendar Grant Fund in any fiscal year, which would be
transferred to the Alabama Modified School Calendar Administration Fund created by this bill
for administration of this program by the department.
