RICHARD GOODWIN. WHEREAS, it is with profound sadness that we note the death on March 30, 2023, of Lieutenant Colonel(Retired) Dr. Richard "Doc" Goodwin of Huntsville, Alabama, at the age of 74 years; and WHEREAS, his passing leaves a void in the lives of his loving family, many friends and the entire community where he was highly regarded; and WHEREAS, Dr. Goodwin's passion for continued education and community service never waned; he graduated from the United States Military Academy (West Point) in 1971, and transferred service to the United States Air Force; later, he taught Physics at West Point and attended the prestigious Air War College in Montgomery, Alabama; he served 20 years in the United States Air Force, retired, and continued his service to his country as a government civil servant working for the Missile Defense Agency (MDA) in Huntsville, Alabama; and WHEREAS, he moved his family to Belgium to work at NATO Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe Headquarters; after his tour ended, he returned to work for the MDA in Huntsville, Alabama; and WHEREAS, as a teenager, Dr. Goodwin achieved scouting's highest rank, Eagle Scout; and 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 11 12 13 14 15 16 17 18 19 20 21 22 23 24 25 26 27 28 HJR143 INTRODUCEDHJR143 INTRODUCED Page 2 WHEREAS, Dr. Goodwin was heavily involved in his church, and was seeking a second doctorate in Theology; he also held Master's Degrees in System Management, Nuclear Engineering, and Theology; and a Doctor of Philosophy in Public Administration; and WHEREAS, survivors include his beloved wife of 50 years, Linda; children, Katie (Pete) and James (Lori); grandchildren, Amelia and Ian; brother, Hugh Goodwin (Marianne); and a host of other relative and friends; and WHEREAS, although his presence will truly missed, the memory of Dr. Goodwin shall be cherished in the hearts of all who knew and loved him; now therefore, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF ALABAMA, BOTH HOUSES THEREOF CONCURRING, That the death of Lieutenant Colonel (Retired) Dr. Richard Goodwin is recorded with deep sadness and this resolution is offered in tribute to his life and with heartfelt sympathy to his family, whose grief is shared by many. 29 30 31 32 33 34 35 36 37 38 39 40 41 42 43 44 45 46
