Senate Bill 129 as introduced provides that the Commissioner and deputy commissioners of the
Department of Corrections who have earned and maintained Alabama Peace Officers' Standards
and Training Commission certification are considered correctional officers for retirement
purposes. This designation is retroactive to March 1, 2022.
According to the actuary of the Retirement Systems of Alabama, the cost associated with this
designation is minimal due to the number of individuals affected by this designation.
