Senate Bill 129 as passed the Senate provides that the Commissioner and deputy commissioners
of the Department of Corrections who have earned and maintained Alabama Peace Officers'
Standards and Training Commission certification are considered correctional officers for
retirement purposes, is retroactive to March 1, 2022.
According to the actuary of the Retirement Systems of Alabama, the cost to the system
associated with this designation is minimal, due to the number of individuals affected by this
designation.
