SB304INTRODUCED Page 0 VMTYPL-1 By Senator Singleton (N & P) RFD: Local Legislation First Read: 11-May-23 2023 Regular Session 1 2 3 4 5 6 VMTYPL-1 05/09/2023 JC (F)tgw 2023-532 Page 1 A BILL TO BE ENTITLED AN ACT Relating to Hale County; to provide for additional minimum qualifications for individuals elected or appointed to the office of sheriff, that the individual is a U.S. citizen, has been a resident and registered voter of Hale County for one year prior to qualifying or being appointed, is a high school graduate or the equivalent, is the age of 25 or older, has three years or more of law enforcement service, has never been convicted of a felony; and to require completion of continuing education. BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF ALABAMA: Section 1. (a) After the effective date of this act, any person qualifying for election to the office of Sheriff of Hale County, or any person appointed to serve as Sheriff of Hale County, in addition to any other qualifications required by law, shall meet all of the following qualifications: (1) The person is a citizen of the United States. (2) The person has been a resident of Hale County for at least one year before the qualification date or being appointed to the office. (4) The person is 25 years of age or older upon the qualification or appointment date. (5) The person has been awarded a high school diploma or GED equivalence. (6) The person has at least three years of experience as a full-time law enforcement officer as certified by the Alabama Peace Officers' Standards and Training Commission. (7) The person has never been convicted of a felony. (b) Upon election or appointment, the sheriff shall annually attend a minimum of 12 hours of executive level continuing education approved by the Alabama Sheriffs Association or the National Sheriffs' Association. Proof of attendance shall be filed with the judge of probate of the county by December 31 of each year. Section 2.
