WHEREAS, the United States beef industry is dedicated to sustainable beef production; as a result of scientific advancements in beef cattle genetics, nutrition, production practices, and biotechnologies, the United States is a global leader in beef production efficiency, reducing carbon emissions per pound of beef produced by more than 40 percent since 1961, while producing 18 percent of the world's beef with only six percent of the world's cattle; and WHEREAS, in its 31st year, the National Cattlemen's Beef Association Environmental Stewardship Award Program has annually recognized the outstanding stewardship practices and conservation achievements of United States cattle producers from across the nation; and WHEREAS, the State of Alabama's $2.5 billion beef cattle industry shares the same commitment to sound land management, animal husbandry, and the implementation of sustainable farming practices with the goal of passing along these resources to the next generation; and WHEREAS, sustainability began as a lifestyle seven generations ago when Carter Cattle Company in Pintlala, Alabama, was established; Dr. Will Carter and Dr. Monnie 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 11 12 13 14 15 16 17 18 19 20 21 22 23 24 25 26 27 28 SJR71 EnrolledSJR71 Enrolled Page 2 Carol Carter make management decisions with the future in mind, utilizing rotational grazing for their forage-based feeding program, an implementation that has been vital to improving the overall health of the farm ecosystem, soil health, forage base, watershed, livestock, and wildlife; and WHEREAS, through conservation incentives offered under the Watershed Project and Environmental Quality Incentives Program, the Carters installed 2,000 feet of water lines to two new water troughs, protected 1,250 square feet of heavy use areas, and built 1,300 feet of fence to exclude cattle from Pintlala Creek; these efforts help the Carters utilize the land in the most effective way for their cattle herd while protecting natural resources; and WHEREAS, in 2022, Carter Cattle Company was nominated by the Alabama Cattlemen's Association and partner organizations to represent the State of Alabama in the National Cattlemen's Beef Association Environmental Stewardship Award Program; and WHEREAS, in February 2023, Carter Cattle Company was named the Southeast Regional Winner, representing the states of Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, Tennessee, Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana in the nationwide contest; and WHEREAS, on April 25, 2023, Carter Cattle Company was named the 2022 National Environmental Stewardship Award Program winner during the National Cattlemen's Beef Association Legislative Conference in Washington, D.C.; now therefore, 29 30 31 32 33 34 35 36 37 38 39 40 41 42 43 44 45 46 47 48 49 50 51 52 53 54 55 56 SJR71 EnrolledSJR71 Enrolled Page 3 BE IT RESOLVED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF ALABAMA, BOTH HOUSES THEREOF CONCURRING, That Carter Cattle Company is highly commended for being named the 2022 National Environmental Stewardship Award winner, and we hereby dedicate this resolution to the company with utmost admiration and regard. 57 58 59 60 61 62 SJR71 EnrolledSJR71 Enrolled Page 4 ________________________________________________ President and Presiding Officer of the Senate ________________________________________________ Speaker of the House of Representatives SJR71 Senate 11-May-23 I hereby certify that the within Act originated in and passed the Senate.
