WHEREAS, with great pride and special pleasure, highest commendations and congratulations are conveyed to United States Veteran George Hudson Place on the occasion of receiving his high school diploma; and WHEREAS, Mr. Place was born on December 29, 1925, to Charles Emory Place and Mary Jane Sprinkle; he attended school in Bayou La Batre until his 16th birthday when he sacrificed his education to join the United States Navy; and WHEREAS, Mr. Place desired to do his part and join the fight in World War II, so he lied about his age; he was sent to basic training in San Diego, California; upon completing training, he served in the Pacific Theater on Engebi Island in the Marshall Islands; he was in the South Pacific for 18 months and achieved the rank of Boatswain's Mate 3rd Class and operated an LCVP, also known as a Higgins Boat, and was awarded numerous medals for his efforts; and WHEREAS, George Place was discharged from the Navy on April 26, 1946, at Middleton Air Force Base in Middleton, Tennessee; he returned home and worked at Brookley Air Force Base in Mobile, Alabama; he discovered that his real passion was shrimping and making shrimping nets for the Bayou La Batre shrimping community; he has been making shrimp nets 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 11 12 13 14 15 16 17 18 19 20 21 22 23 24 25 26 27 28 HJR193 INTRODUCED Page 2 Batre shrimping community; he has been making shrimp nets for over seven decades; WHEREAS, Mr. Place is a true patriot of the United States; he prioritized his country and its citizens' safety and freedom over his own education; yet he has earned a lifetime of knowledge and skills from his experiences in the U.S. Navy and the decades since; and as a hero, he has earned his honorary high school diploma, which will be awarded to him on the graduation stage from Alma Bryant High School in his hometown of Bayou La Batre on May 14, 2024; now therefore, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF ALABAMA, BOTH HOUSES THEREOF CONCURRING, That it is an honor to offer this resolution to United States Veteran George Hudson Place as evidence of our high regard and appreciation for his sacrifice of self in service to his country and with our heartiest congratulations on the occasion of his long-awaited and well-deserved high school graduation. 29 30 31 32 33 34 35 36 37 38 39 40 41 42 43 44 45
