This bill would provide certified teachers with one year of experience credit on the local salary schedule for every two years that he or she previously worked as a paraprofessional or classroom teacher's aide at a public school in this state, provided that he or she has a minimum of four years total experience. This bill would only apply to certified teachers hired on or after June 1, 2024. A BILL TO BE ENTITLED AN ACT Relating to public education; to add Section 16-23-25 to the Code of Alabama 1975; to provide certain certified teachers who previously worked as a paraprofessional or classroom teacher's aide with experience credit on the local salary schedule. Section 16-23-25 is added to the Code of Alabama 1975, to read as follows: ยง16-23-25 (a) A teacher with at least four years of full-time experience as a paraprofessional or classroom teacher's aide in a public school who is: (i) issued a teacher certificate pursuant to this chapter; and (ii) hired into a position requiring such certification, shall receive one year of experience credit on the local teacher salary schedule established pursuant to Section 16-23-231.1 for every two years of full-time experience that he or she earned in a public school as a paraprofessional or classroom teacher's aide prior to being hired as a certified teacher. (b) This section shall only apply to teachers hired into a position requiring teacher certification on or after June 1, 2024. Section 2.
