Senate Bill 217 as reported by the Committee on Education Policy would increase the
obligations of local boards of education by an undetermined amount to add additional years of
experience credit on the local salary schedule for certain teachers who previously worked as
paraprofessionals or classroom teacher's aides. The increased obligation would be dependent
upon (1) the number of paraprofessionals or classroom teacher's aides that obtain a teaching
certificate and are hired into a position requiring a certification after June 1, 2024; and (2) the
additional number of years of experience credit added for every two years of full-time
experience as a paraprofessional or classroom teacher aide.
