BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF ALABAMA: Section 1. Section 45-50-230, Code of Alabama 1975, is amended to read as follows: "§45-50-230 (a)(1) In Monroe County, effective immediately, the sheriff is entitled to receive an expense allowance in the amount of ten thousand dollars ($10,000) per annum. The expense allowance shall be in addition to any and all other compensation heretofore provided by law and shall be payable from the county general fund. (2) The expense allowance provided for by this subsection shall be paid each month from the treasury of Monroe County, in the same manner as county employees are paid. The sheriff receiving this expense allowance shall not be required to file an accounting thereof. (3) Effective with the beginning of the next term of office, the sheriff is hereby entitled to receive an additional county salary in the amount of ten thousand dollars ($10,000) per annum and the provisions of subdivision (1), at that time, shall become null and void. The county compensation shall be paid out of the General Fund of Monroe County in the same manner as other county employees. (4) If there should be enacted a statewide law providing for an increase in the sheriff’s salary which, when 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 11 12 13 14 15 16 17 18 19 20 21 22 23 24 25 26 27 28 HB431 Enrolled Page 2 providing for an increase in the sheriff’s salary which, when added to the increase provided for under this subsection shall exceed ten thousand dollars ($10,000), then the amount of the salary increase provided for under this subsection shall decrease by the amount in excess of ten thousand dollars ($10,000). (b)(1) The Sheriff of Monroe County shall receive an expense allowance of ten thousand dollars ($10,000) per year, payable in equal monthly installments from the general fund of the county. This expense allowance shall be in addition to all other compensation or benefits received by the sheriff and may be treated as compensation for retirement contributions. (2) Beginning with the next term of office, the expense allowance paid to the sheriff as provided in subdivision (1) shall become additional compensation for the sheriff and the expense allowance shall be null and void. This compensation shall be in addition to all other compensation or benefits received. (c)(1) The Sheriff of Monroe County shall receive an additional expense allowance of fifteen thousand dollars ($15,000) per year, payable in equal monthly installments from the general fund of the county. This expense allowance shall be in addition to all other compensation or benefits received by the sheriff and may be treated as compensation for retirement contributions. This compensation shall be in addition to all other compensation or benefits received. (a) Until January 18, 2027, the Sheriff of Monroe County shall continue to receive the same base annual salary the sheriff is receiving on May 31, 2025. (b) Beginning October 1, 2025, in addition to the base salary authorized in subsection (a), the sheriff shall receive an expense allowance of fifteen thousand dollars ($15,000) per annum, payable in equal monthly installments from the county general fund. The expense allowance shall be treated as salary for retirement purposes. (c) Beginning January 18, 2027, the sheriff's base salary authorized in subsection (a) shall be increased by fifteen thousand dollars ($15,000) per annum and the expense allowance authorized in subsection (b) is repealed. " Section 2.
