WHEREAS, with great pride and special pleasure, joyful felicitations are conveyed to Mrs. Eunie Walldorf Smith on the occasion of her milestone 90th Birthday and this body would take this opportunity to honor her many years of public service in the State of Alabama; and WHEREAS, Eunie Walldorf was born in the midst of the Great Depression on April 25, 1935, in Chattanooga, Tennessee; Fred Astaire was crooning "Cheek to Cheek" over the airwaves and the runaway success at the Academy Awards was It Happened One Night, winning Best Picture, Director, Actor, Actress, and Screenplay; and WHEREAS, Eunie Smith showed two things at an early age: a fierce intelligence and a steadfast faith in Christ; she graduated cum laude from Vanderbilt University with a Bachelor of Arts in Economics and Business and served as Vice President of the Women's Student Government Association; upon graduation, she worked as a Group Actuarial Assistant Data Processing Systems Designer and Computer Programmer for Provident Life and Accident Insurance Company; she met and married Albert Lee Smith, Jr. who served as a member of the United States House of 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 11 12 13 14 15 16 17 18 19 20 21 22 23 24 25 26 27 28 HJR276 INTRODUCED Page 2 who served as a member of the United States House of Representatives serving Alabama's 6th District during the 97th Congress; and WHEREAS, Mrs. Smith was devoted to her husband until his passing in 1997; together they shared three children, Karen, Albert Lee III, and Meg, and six grandchildren; as a loving and involved mother, her volunteer activities began with her children's schools, the Junior League and other service organizations, her church, and the Freedom Education Foundation; and WHEREAS, Mrs. Smith has continuously served others in the areas of community service, church service, and politics since the 1970s; some of her past service includes, Service Guild of Birmingham; Discovery Clubs of Alabama; Women's Committee of 100 for Birmingham; many roles with the Southern Baptist Convention spanning decades; the Governor's Commission on Education Spending; Alabama Governor's Conference on Library Services; Delegate to the 1976 Republican National Convention; and WHEREAS, Mrs. Smith continues to serve as a member of the Southern Seminary Foundation Board; a member of the Resolutions Committee for the Alabama Baptist Convention; as the longest serving President of Eagle Forum of Alabama; and as the National Vice President of Eagle Forum; she has earned several awards and acknowledgments for her generous gifts of her time and talents, including Congress of Freedom Award; Alabama Eagle Award, 1992; National Eagle Award, 1981 and 1974; Hoffman Center Award, 1992; and Physicians' Resource Council Service to the Family Award, 1996; and 29 30 31 32 33 34 35 36 37 38 39 40 41 42 43 44 45 46 47 48 49 50 51 52 53 54 55 56 HJR276 INTRODUCED Page 3 Resource Council Service to the Family Award, 1996; and WHEREAS, a 90th Birthday is a significant milestone that represents almost a century of wisdom earned and memories gained and is cause for great rejoicing; Mrs. Smith remains a source of inspiration to her family, neighbors, and friends, who cherish every moment shared; now therefore, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF ALABAMA, BOTH HOUSES THEREOF CONCURRING, That Eunie Walldorf Smith's 90th Birthday is celebrated with thanksgiving, and her many years of public service is commended and honored on this special occasion. 57 58 59 60 61 62 63 64 65 66
