MARGARET ANN BRELAND-BRADLEY. WHEREAS, it is with profound sorrow that we note the death of Dr. Margaret Ann Breland-Bradley of Brewton, Alabama, on February 8, 2025, at the age of 77; and WHEREAS, her departure leaves a void in the lives of her loving family, many friends, and the communities in Alabama and New York where she was highly regarded; and WHEREAS, Margaret Ann Breland was born on September 19, 1947, to Milton Homer Breland and Ruby Clyde Preyer; she was the oldest sibling of four sisters and seven brothers; it was during her childhood that she knew that she wanted to be an educator, frequently tutoring her brothers and sisters; she was an honor roll student and a graduate of Southern Normal School, Class of 1965; and WHEREAS, Margaret Breland married her high school sweetheart, Charlie Bradley, Jr.; the couple moved to New York and she embarked on her higher education journey; she earned her Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education in 1971, a Master of Education with a focus on Reading in 1974, and an Educational Leadership School District Administration degree in 1977, all from Queens College; and she earned her Doctor of Philosophy in Gifted Education from Columbia University in 1990; and 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 11 12 13 14 15 16 17 18 19 20 21 22 23 24 25 26 27 28 HR87 INTRODUCED Page 2 University in 1990; and WHEREAS, as an educator, Dr. Bradley touched the lives of many students and mentored many young teachers; from 1972 to 1998, she advanced from special education teacher to special education coordinator, assistant principal, principal, and community superintendent of schools in New York City Public Schools; she accepted a position as principal of P.S. 223 Queens, where she made an impact on students, teachers, and families; she brought a culture of excellence and learning to the school, winning over the faculty and teaching students to believe in themselves through the practice of daily positive affirmations; the school became known for its Multicultural Program that she pioneered; she shined as a brilliant and effective leader; and WHEREAS, Dr. Bradley returned to Brewton and was the first woman and African American to be appointed Superintendent of Schools for the Escambia County Board of Education, serving from 1998 to 2000; when she moved home, it was with the goal of reopening the Southern Normal School as the Brewton Campus of Alabama State University, which she accomplished and served as its Chief Executive Officer from 2002 to 2006; she developed and administered the programs at the new campus, including after-school and Saturday enrichment programs for K-12 students and professional development programs for teachers and school administrators; she attained funding and developed a Principals Center for local and Black Belt counties in Alabama; and instituted many more programs; and 29 30 31 32 33 34 35 36 37 38 39 40 41 42 43 44 45 46 47 48 49 50 51 52 53 54 55 56 HR87 INTRODUCED Page 3 many more programs; and WHEREAS, Dr. Bradley was predeceased by her parents; stepfather, Joseph Henry Washington, Sr.; husband; and brothers, Charles Washington and Dwayne Breland; she will be lovingly remembered by her children, Charles Terrance Bradley and Kwana Makeisha Bradley; brothers and sisters; and a host of nieces, nephews, extended family, colleagues, and friends; and WHEREAS, Dr. Bradley was a lifetime member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated, and a member of the Lily Chapter #592, Order of the Eastern Star; although her joyful presence will be greatly missed, the memory of Margaret Ann Breland-Bradley will be cherished in the hearts of all who knew and loved her; now therefore, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE LEGISLATURE OF ALABAMA, That the death of Dr. Margaret Ann Breland-Bradley is recorded with deep sadness, and this resolution is offered to her family in tribute to her life and with heartfelt sympathy to her loved ones whose grief is shared by many. 57 58 59 60 61 62 63 64 65 66 67 68 69 70 71 72 73 74 75 76
