Senate Bill 178as passed the Senate would create the Speedy Trial Fund in the State Treasury
to fund the compensation of a visiting judge appointed to preside over certain violent crime
cases, along with the other costs associated with the adjudication of such cases, as provided by
this bill. Current law caps the maximum compensation of a judge called into interim activity
status at $39,000 per year ($780 per day for a maximum of 50 days).
Further this bill could increase the obligations of the Office of Attorney General or certain
district attorneys by an undetermined amount dependent on the cost of contracting for court
reporting services to support a visiting judge as allowed by this bill.
