SJR___ CELEBRATING THE 150TH ANNIVERSARY OF EVERGREEN
BAPTIST CHURCH.
WHEREAS, the churches in Alabama have been an
integral part of our history as a people and have had an
unparalleled impact in forming and maintaining a stable and
just society; and
WHEREAS, it is appropriate that we should recognize
these venerable religious institutions and their
congregations who, through their unflagging capacity for
love, dedication of spirit, and faith in God, strive to
enrich the lives of people in their communities; and
WHEREAS, one such dynamic and historic community of
faith is Evergreen Baptist Church, located in Clayton,
Alabama, the members of which will celebrate the church's
150th Anniversary this year; and
WHEREAS, Evergreen Baptist Church was originally
built as a log structure on land donated by Reverend A.H.
Borders, the first pastor; it was later replaced by a square
frame building with wooden shutters, which served the
congregation until 1942, when the current building was
constructed; over the ensuing years, the church building has
been expanded and renovated many times to meet the needs of
the changing congregation; and
WHEREAS, for 150 years, holy guidance and leadership

WHEREAS, for 150 years, holy guidance and leadership
has been provided by many different pastors who have all
left their marks on the historic church, congregation, and
community; these pastors include Reverend J.A. Seay; Pastor
F.M. Shirah; Reverend Lon Renfroe; Reverend W.T. James;
Reverend B.S. Warr; Reverend Wendell Wentz; Reverend L.D.
Woodham; Pastor Scott Watson; Pastor S.J. Graham; Pastor
K.B. Russell; Pastor Ronald Earles; Pastor Raymond Miller;
and Pastor Earl Ledbetter, Jr.; and
WHEREAS, Pastor Wiley McWhorter is currently serving
as minister to the congregation of Evergreen Baptist Church;
and
WHEREAS, Evergreen Baptist Church has survived
throughout the years by the commitment of its members and by
the loving grace of God; many generations of congregants
have been encouraged and their faith strengthened through
the leadership of this church; and
WHEREAS, a remarkable congregation indeed, Evergreen
Baptist Church has been passionately sharing the Word and
love of God, transforming lives, and bringing people
together in fellowship for a century and a half; now
therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF ALABAMA, BOTH
HOUSES THEREOF CONCURRING, That we join in celebrating the
150th Anniversary of Evergreen Baptist Church, and this
resolution is offered to its pastor and congregation in
deepest admiration and appreciation, along with sincere best
wishes for continued blessings.
