OF MAY 2022 AS TARDIVE DYSKINESIA 14 
AWARENESS WEEK IN ARKANSAS.  15

 17 
 WHEREAS, many people who have a serious chronic mental illness such as 18 
schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, or severe depression, or who have a 19 
gastrointestinal disorder such as gastroparesis or symptoms such as nausea 20 
and vomiting, require treatment with medications t hat work as dopamine 21 
receptor blocking agents, including antipsychotics; and 22 
 23 
 WHEREAS, while ongoing treatment with these medications can be very 24 
helpful and even lifesaving, it can also lead those undergoing treatment to 25 
experience tardive dyskinesia ; and 26 
 27 
 WHEREAS, tardive dyskinesia is a movement disorder characterized by 28 
random, involuntary, and uncontrolled movements of muscles in the face, 29 
trunk, and extremities ; and 30 
 31 
 WHEREAS, tardive dyskinesia can develop months, years, or decades after 32 
a person starts taking dopamine receptor blocking agents, even after he or 33 
she has discontinued use of those medications, and is often permanent; and  34 
 35 
 WHEREAS, it is estimated that more than six hundred thousand (600,000) 36     	HR1039

Americans suffer from tardive dyskinesia, and the National Alliance on Mental 1 
Illness reports that one (1) in every four (4) patients receiving long	-term 2 
treatment with antipsychotic medication will experience tardive dyskinesia	; 3 
and 4 
 5 
 WHEREAS, tardive dyskinesia research has resulted in recent s cientific 6 
breakthroughs, including two new treatments approved by the United States 7 
Food and Drug Administration; and 8 
 9 
 WHEREAS, tardive dyskinesia is often unrecognized, and patients 10 
suffering from the disorder are sometimes misdiagnosed, leading the Ame	rican 11 
Psychiatric Association to recommend heightened awareness of and regular 12 
screening for TARDIVE DYSKINESIA in patients taking DRBAs ; and 13 
 14 
 WHEREAS, tardive dyskinesia Awareness Week is recognized in many states 15 
across the country during the first week of May each year, 16 
 17 
NOW THEREFORE, 18 
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE NINETY -THIRD GENERAL 19 
ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ARKANSAS: 20 
 21 
 THAT the House of Representatives recognize the first week of May 2022 22 
as Tardive Dyskinesia Awareness Week. 23
