AS TARDIVE DYSKINESI A AWARENESS WEEK IN ARKANSAS.  9

A RESOLUTION RECOGNIZING THE FIRST WEEK 13 
OF MAY 2023 AS TARDIVE DYSKINESIA 14 
AWARENESS WEEK IN ARKANSAS. 15 
 16 
 WHEREAS, many people who have a serious chronic mental illness such as 17 
schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, or severe depression, or who have a 18 
gastrointestinal disorder such as gastroparesis or symptoms such as nausea 19 
and vomiting, require treatment with medications that work as dopamine 22 20 
receptor blocking agents, including antipsychotics; and 21 
 22 
 WHEREAS, while ongoing treatment with these medications can be very 23 
helpful and even lifesaving, it can also lead those undergoing treatment to 24 
experience tardive dyskinesia; and 25 
 26 
 WHEREAS, tardive dyskinesia is a movement disorder characterized by 27 
random, involuntary, and uncontrolled movements of muscles in the face, 28 
trunk, and extremities; and 29 
 30 
 WHEREAS, tardive dyskinesia can develop months, years, or decades after 31 
a person starts taking dopamine receptor blocking agents, even after he or 32 
she has discontinued use of those medications, and is often permanent; and  33 
 34 
 WHEREAS, it is estimated that more than six hundred thousand (600,000) 35 
Americans suffer from tardive dyskinesia, and the National Alliance on Mental 36     	HR1063

Illness reports that one (1) in every four (4) patients receiving long	-term 1 
treatment with antipsychotic medication will experience tardive dyskinesia; 2 
and 3 
 4 
 WHEREAS, tardive dyskinesia research has resulted in recent scien tific 5 
breakthroughs, including two treatments approved by the United States Food 6 
and Drug Administration; and 7 
 8 
 WHEREAS, tardive dyskinesia is often unrecognized, and patients 9 
suffering from the disorder are sometimes misdiagnosed, leading the American 10 
Psychiatric Association to recommend heightened awareness of and regular 11 
screening for tardive dyskinesia in patients taking DRBAs; and 12 
 13 
 WHEREAS, Tardive Dyskinesia Awareness Week is recognized in many states 14 
across the country during the first week of May each year, 15 
 16 
NOW THEREFORE,  17 
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE NINETY -FOURTH GENERAL 18 
ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ARKANSAS: 19

THAT the House of Representatives recognize the first week of May 2023 as 21 
Tardive Dyskinesia Awareness Week. 22
