A HAPPY 107TH BIRTHDAY AND TO RECOGNIZE 16
AND HONOR HER SERVICE TO THE STATE OF 17

WHEREAS, Elizabeth "Betty" Kaufman Thines was born in the rural 20
community of St. Vincent, Arkansas, on March 4, 1918; and 21
22
WHEREAS, Elizabeth "Betty" Kaufman Thines worked alongside eight (8) of 23
her siblings to take over operation of Kaufman Farms in 1931, and they were 24
selected as the 1939 Arkansas landowner champions of the Plant to Prosper 25
Competition, which recognized farmers who incorporated best farming practices 26
and improved utilization of cotton cropland; and 27

WHEREAS, Elizabeth "Betty" Kaufman Thines served as Deputy County Clerk 29
in Conway County, Arkansas, from 1941 -45; and 30
31
WHEREAS, Elizabeth "Betty" Kaufman Thines was a stenographer and 32
secretary for the House of Representatives during 1953 -55 and 1959; and 33
34
WHEREAS, during her time of service to the House of Representatives in 35
Arkansas, Elizabeth "Betty" Kaufman Thines lived and worked in Vermont, but 36 HR1054

she chose to take a leave of absence from her primary employment to return to 1
Arkansas and serve the legislature in her home state; and 2

WHEREAS, Elizabeth "Betty" Kaufman Thines was pleased to serve the 4
State of Arkansas and is proud that photographs of her during her time of 5
service with the House of Representatives are still on display in the State 6
Capitol Building; and 7

WHEREAS, from 1959-68, Elizabeth "Betty" Kaufman Thines co -owned and 9
operated, alongside her husband, Henry, Thines Supermarket in Morrilton; and 10

WHEREAS, Elizabeth "Betty" Kaufman Thines has executed an integral role 12
in the preservation and continuation of Kaufman Farms, which was designated 13
as an Arkansas Century Farm in 2018; and 14
15
WHEREAS, one (1) of the job responsibilities of Elizabeth "Betty" 16
Kaufman Thines was to officially record votes made by the House of 17
Representatives on resolutions; and 18
19
WHEREAS, the House of Representatives wishes to recognize Elizabeth 20
"Betty" Kaufman Thines by conducting a vote on the floor of the House of 21
Representatives to honor her public service and the many contributions she 22
has made to the State of Arkansas that are worthy of recognition on the 23
memorable occasion of her one hundred seventh birthday, 24

NOW THEREFORE, 26
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE NINETY -FIFTH GENERAL 27
ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ARKANSAS: 28

THAT the House of Representatives wish Elizabeth "Betty" Kaufman Thines 30
a happy one hundred seventh birthday and recognize and honor her service to 31
the State of Arkansas. 32

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED THAT upon adoption of this resolution, a copy be 34
provided to Elizabeth "Betty" Kaufman Thines by the Chief Clerk of the House 35
of Representatives. 36
