Assigned to APPROP FOR COMMITTEE ARIZONA STATE SENATE Fifty-Fifth Legislature, Second Regular Session FACT SHEET FOR H.B. 2506 appropriation; immigration enforcement; reimbursement; fund Purpose Establishes the Local Immigration Enforcement Reimbursement Fund (Fund) and appropriates $30,000,000 from the state General Fund (state GF) in FY 2023 to the Fund. Background The U.S. Attorney General may enter into a written agreement with a state, or any political subdivision of a state, who is determined by the U.S. Attorney General to be qualified to perform a function of an immigration officer in relation to the investigation, apprehension or detention of aliens in the United States including the transportation of such aliens across state lines to detention centers. The U.S. Attorney General may carry out these duties at the expense of the State or political subdivision as long as the duties are consistent with State and local law (8 U.S.C. ยง 1357). H.B. 2506 appropriates $30,000,000 from the state GF in FY 2023 to the Fund. Provisions 1. Establishes the Fund, to be administered by the Arizona Department of Homeland Security, consisting of legislative appropriations and private donations. 2. Requires Fund monies to be used to reimburse a county or local law enforcement agency for costs incurred for participating in a program with the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. 3. Appropriates $30,000,000 from the state GF in FY 2023 to the Fund. 4. Exempts monies in the Fund from lapsing. 5. Becomes effective on the general effective date.
