ARIZONA STATE SENATE
Fifty-Sixth Legislature, First Regular Session

FACT SHEET FOR S.B. 1142

voter registration events; posting
Purpose
Requires the Secretary of State (SOS) and each county recorder to post a list on its website
of each event the SOS's Office or the county recorder's office attends and provides voter
registration services and prescribes requirements relating to the list of events.
Background
Federal, state, county and local government agencies, political parties and private
organizations may conduct voter registration activities. The county recorder and SOS must provide
voter registration forms as prescribed by statute (A.R.S. § 16-151). To be eligible to vote in
Arizona, the registrant must be a citizen of the United States (A.R.S. § 16-101). A person is
presumed to be properly registered to vote on completion of a registration form that contains
certain identifying information and a checkmark or other appropriate indicator that the person
answered "yes" to the citizenship question. Any application that does not include the information
required to be on the registration form and any application that is not signed is incomplete
(A.R.S. § 16-121.01).
There is no anticipated fiscal impact to the state General Fund associated with this
legislation.
