Assigned to MAPS FOR COMMITTEE ARIZONA STATE SENATE Fifty-Sixth Legislature, Second Regular Session FACT SHEET FOR H.B. 2722 national guard; life insurance Purpose Entitles officers and enlisted personnel of the Arizona National Guard to a $10,000 group life insurance benefit at the state's expense. Background Officers and enlisted personnel of the Arizona National Guard who remain on state active duty for more than 30 consecutive days by order of the Governor or Adjutant General are considered state employees and are eligible for health and accident insurance benefits, including dependents. On completing state active duty orders, National Guard members may not continue to receive health and accident insurance benefits. Qualified national guardsmen, or their spouse or legal dependent, may also be eligible for tuition reimbursement at a public or private postsecondary educational institution if they meet outlined criteria (A.R.S. ยงยง 26-158 and 26-179). If the state is required to pay for costs associated with providing a group life insurance policy for officers and enlisted personnel of the Arizona National Guard, there may be an impact to the state General Fund. Provisions 1. Entitles officers and enlisted personnel of the Arizona National Guard to a $10,000 group life insurance benefit at the state's expense. 2. Specifies that the $10,000 life insurance benefit is payable by the provider of the program: a) to the officer's or personnel's named beneficiary; or b) pursuant to statute governing intestate succession if there is no named beneficiary. 3. Specifies that the $10,000 life insurance benefit is in addition to any health insurance or accident benefit provided to guardsmen. 4. Becomes effective on the general effective date.
