WHEREAS, Hatred and bigotry remain significant and dangerous problems in the United States and in California; and WHEREAS, An act of hate committed against any one person is also an act against the entire community; and WHEREAS, It is the right of every person to live with the expectation that he or she will not be physically, emotionally, or psychologically abused or intimidated; and WHEREAS, All people should be treated with courtesy and respect, regardless of their racial background, the language they speak, their nation of origin, the religion they practice, their real or perceived sexual orientation, gender identity, age, or disability; and WHEREAS, We honor, respect, and protect the diversity that makes California one of the most culturally rich areas of the world, and celebrate multiculturalism and diversity as a necessity of life; and WHEREAS, Although discrimination has declined over the years, Californians will not be satisfied until hate is eliminated completely; and WHEREAS, The State of California can move toward this goal by enacting the Anti-Defamation League's No Place for Hate (registered trademark) program, which enables people to challenge anti-Semitism, racism, homophobia, and all forms of bigotry in their communities and schools. By providing resources and education to California school districts, this program seeks to provide a model for responding to and preventing acts of hatred, enhances an appreciation for diversity, and fosters harmony; and WHEREAS, Hate has no place in California, and every person deserves the basic principles of equality and civil rights guaranteed to all persons by the United States Constitution and the Bill of Rights; now, therefore, be it Resolved by the Assembly of the State of California, the Senate thereof concurring, That the Legislature hereby designates the month of February 2012 as No Place for Hate (registered trademark) Month, and urges that the issue of hate crimes, and the methods of preventing them, be discussed with appropriate activities in schools during this month; and be it further Resolved, That the Legislature encourages the people of California to adopt a culture of tolerance, to accept diversity, and to embrace each other as individuals every day of every year; and be it further Resolved, That the Chief Clerk of the Assembly transmit copies of this resolution to the author for appropriate distribution.
