 BILL NUMBER: SCR 13INTRODUCED BILL TEXT INTRODUCED BY Senator Harman FEBRUARY 18, 2011 Relative to declaring Schoolbus Drivers Day. LEGISLATIVE COUNSEL'S DIGEST SCR 13, as introduced, Harman. Schoolbus Drivers Day. This measure would declare April 26, 2011, to be Schoolbus Drivers Day in California. Fiscal committee: no. WHEREAS, On April 26, 2011, the California Association of School Transportation Officials will recognize all schoolbus drivers for their continued and excellent services to the youth of the state, and it is appropriate at this time to highlight the many achievements of California's schoolbus drivers and extend to them the special recognition of the public; and WHEREAS, The California Association of School Transportation Officials promotes safe pupil transportation, and advocates for continued high standards for California's schoolbus drivers; and WHEREAS, The safety of our children rests in the hands of trained schoolbus drivers for up to six and seven hours each schoolday; and WHEREAS, Personal time and energy are expended by schoolbus drivers in their initial training, maintaining a current license, perfecting their driving skills, and accruing added knowledge of schoolbus laws through continuing education classes; and WHEREAS, Through counseling and disciplinary techniques, schoolbus drivers are sometimes asked to assist pupils to display appropriate behavior with peers and adults; and WHEREAS, Schoolbus drivers often face natural and unexpected hazards in the performance of their duties; and WHEREAS, Schoolbus drivers exhibit patience and kindness toward pupils, parents, and school staff while performing their duties; and WHEREAS, Schoolbus drivers consistently demonstrate an awareness of, and direct attention to, the mechanical maintenance of their schoolbuses and the safety conditions of schoolbus routes; and WHEREAS, Schoolbus drivers perform their services, and produce thousands and thousands of accident-free miles, year after year; now, therefore, be it Resolved by the Senate of the State of California, the Assembly thereof concurring, That the Legislature of the State of California commends the California Association of School Transportation Officials for its dedication and contributions to the people of California and promotion of safe pupil transportation while upholding high standards for California schoolbus drivers; and be it further Resolved, That the Legislature declares April 26, 2011, to be Schoolbus Drivers Day in California; and be it further Resolved, That the Secretary of the Senate transmit copies of this resolution to the author for appropriate distribution.
