City of San Diegos Naval Training Station.This measure would designate specified exits on Interstate 5 as the routes for reaching the Naval Training Station and would request the Department of Transportation to determine the costs of appropriate historic landmark signs showing that designation, and, upon receipt of donations from nonstate sources sufficient to cover that cost, to erect the historic landmark signs.Digest Key Fiscal Committee: YES Bill TextWHEREAS, The City of San Diegos Naval Training Center, registered by the United States Department of the Interiors National Park Service as the Naval Training Station, welcomed its first United States Navy recruits in 1923; andWHEREAS, The Naval Training Station gained new buildings over the decade that followed, and continued to expand through World War II when the Naval Training Center tripled in size; andWHEREAS, During the expansion of the Naval Training Station to accommodate additional military needs, the site architects built the additional buildings and barracks in a scaled-down Spanish Colonial Revival style that can be seen in historic landmarks across the City of San Diego and southern California, such as Balboa Park; and WHEREAS, The Naval Training Station served as one of the nations central training facilities for the United States Navy until it closed in 1997; andWHEREAS, After closure of the Naval Training Station in 1997, the Naval Training Center Reuse Committee was formed from representatives of environmental, business, cultural, nonprofit, and community groups across the City of San Diego to create the Reuse Plan, a roadmap for the future of the property; andWHEREAS, In 2001, the United States Department of the Interiors National Park Service certified the property and entered it into the National Register of Historical Places; andWHEREAS, In 2003, the Liberty Station Community Association was created to manage, maintain, and foster the initial vision of the Naval Training Center Reuse Committee, City of San Diego, and master developer, and to celebrate the Naval Training Station historic district, known today as Liberty Station; andWHEREAS, Over the past decade, Liberty Station has become a hub of unique culinary, art, cultural, and shopping experiences, all nestled in 125 expansive acres of beautiful open space; andWHEREAS, The recognition of the Naval Training Station as a historic destination through the placement of freeway signs will encourage the continued growth and redevelopment of this important component of the history of the City of San Diego; now, therefore, be itResolved by the Assembly of the State of California, the Senate thereof concurring, That the Legislature hereby designates the Hawthorn Street and Brant Street exit on Interstate 5 north and the Sea World Drive exit on Interstate 5 south as the defined routes for reaching the historic landmark, the Naval Training Station; and be it furtherResolved, That the Department of Transportation is requested to determine the cost of the appropriate historic landmark signs, consistent with the signing requirements of the state highway system, showing this designation, and upon receiving donations from nonstate sources sufficient to cover the cost, to erect the historic landmark signs; and be it furtherResolved, That the Chief Clerk of the Assembly transmit copies of this resolution to the Department of Transportation and to the author for appropriate distribution.
