The measure would request the Department of Transportation to determine the cost of appropriate signs showing this special designation and, upon receiving donations from nonstate sources covering that cost, to erect those signs.Digest Key Fiscal Committee: YES Bill TextWHEREAS, On March 9, 2018, Officer Greggory Jonathan Casillas of the Pomona Police Department died while serving in the line of duty, and his untimely death in the pursuit of the highest ideals of public safety has brought immense sorrow and loss to the people of the local community and throughout the state and the countless individuals whose lives he touched; andWHEREAS, Born on April 22, 1987, in Glendale, Officer Greggory Casillas began his career in public safety in March 2015, serving as a Pomona Police Records Specialist until November of that year, at which time he became a Pomona Police Jailer and served in that capacity for one year, later entering the police academy on March 19, 2017, and being sworn as a Pomona Police Officer on September 7, 2017; andWHEREAS, A man of great faith, Officer Casillas adored his family and greatly enjoyed hiking, especially on the San Dimas Trail, as well as eating Mexican dishes, trying new foods, and cooking healthy meals; andWHEREAS, Officer Casillas was a true gentleman in every sense of the word, and will be remembered by his coworkers for his dedication to details and his honesty and by his siblings as a calm and collected individual who always thought ahead and was committed to accomplishing his goals; andWHEREAS, Throughout his tenure with the Pomona Police Department, Officer Casillas, a mature, stable, and responsible man, exemplified the true character of the brave men and women who devote their time and energy to the perilous duties of law enforcement, and he was renowned among his fellow officers for loving, honoring, and being dedicated to his family, the uniform, and the law enforcement community, all of which were indelible and inseparable in his life; andWHEREAS, At the time of his death, Officer Greggory Casillas left to mourn his passing and cherish his memory his wife, Claudia; his sons Gregorio and Mariano; his father, Greggory; his mother, Marisela; his brothers, Dominick and Shawn; and his many longtime friends, the law enforcement community, and a grateful public; now, therefore, be it Resolved by the Assembly of the State of California, the Senate thereof concurring, That the Legislature conveys its heartfelt sorrow at the passing of Officer Greggory Jonathan Casillas, and extends its deepest appreciation of the people of California for his dedication to preserving public safety; and be it furtherResolved, That the Legislature designates the portion of Interstate 10 between the North San Antonio Avenue undercrossing, post mile LA 4.718, in the County of Los Angeles, to the Mountain Avenue undercrossing, post mile SBD 2.37, in the County of San Bernardino, as the Pomona Police Officer Greggory Casillas Memorial Highway; and be it furtherResolved, That the Department of Transportation is requested to determine the cost of erecting the appropriate signs consistent with the signing requirements for the state highway system showing this special designation and, upon receiving donations from nonstate sources sufficient to cover the cost, to erect those signs; and be it furtherResolved, That the Chief Clerk of the Assembly transmit copies of this resolution to the Director of Transportation and to the author for appropriate distribution.
