(b) Food is the single most prevalent item in Californias waste stream, with over 5.5 million tons of food dumped in landfills every year in the state. Americans throw away an estimated 21 percent of the food they bring home, equivalent to more than 20 pounds of food per person per month.(c) Consumer education to raise awareness of food waste and educating consumers about ways to reduce food waste have been identified as among the most effective strategies to prevent food waste.SEC. 2.
