Existing law establishes the Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation, and charges it with certain duties and powers, including, among other things, the operation of prisons and other specified institutions. This bill would require the department to submit a report, as specified, to the Legislature on or before October 1 of each year, to include, among other things, descriptions of progress toward meeting the departments goals related to the completion of suicide risk evaluations, progress toward completion of 72 hour treatment plans, and progress in identifying and implementing initiatives that are designed to reduce risk factors associated with suicide. The bill would require the report to be posted on the departments Internet Web site. The bill would also require the department to make all reasonable efforts to notify the contact person of an inmate, if a contact person is listed on record, within 24 hours in the event of the inmates serious illness or injury resulting in hospitalization or placement in a mental health crisis bed, which would include attempted suicide, as specified, or an inmates death.
