Digest KeyBill TextWHEREAS, The University of Southern California (USC) football team, the Trojans, have appeared in an unprecedented 33 Rose Bowl football games, where it has a record of 25-8; andWHEREAS, USC not only has the most Rose Bowl wins of any college football team, but also has the most wins at any particular bowl game of any college football team; andWHEREAS, USC has won 12 of the last 14 Rose Bowls that it has appeared in and recently won the Rose Bowl again on January 2, 2017; andWHEREAS, At the recent Rose Bowl game, USC played Penn State for the third time. USC played Penn State for the first time in the Rose Bowl in 1923, which was the first Rose Bowl game played in the current Pasadena stadium as well as the first bowl game for both teams. USC played Penn State for the second time in the Rose Bowl in 2009; and WHEREAS, At the recent Rose Bowl game before a sold-out crowd of 95,128 fans and a national television audience, quarterback Sam Darnold threw a Rose Bowl record 5 touchdowns and place-kicker Matt Boermeester nailed a 46-yard field goal at the gun to help USC overcome a 14-point fourth quarter deficit and propel USC to a 52-49 win over Penn State; andWHEREAS, The 2017 Rose Bowl was the highest scoring Rose Bowl in history and featured the largest fourth quarter deficit a team has overcome to win a Rose Bowl; and WHEREAS, The victory not only snapped Penn States 9-game winning streak, but also extended USCs winning streak to 9 games and gave USC its 26th 10-win season; andWHEREAS, The USC college football program has a storied history and has accumulated many records and accomplishments, including 11 national championships and 34 bowl wins. USC is also in the top 10 of all college football teams in career wins and winning percentage and its players include 166 All-American first teamers, 6 Heisman trophy winners, 477 NFL players, 497 NFL draftees, including 79 who were drafted in the first round and 5 who were drafted number one overall, 22 Academic All-American first teamers, 13 National Football Foundation Scholar-Athletes, 15 professional football Hall of Famers, and 40 college football Hall of Famers; andWHEREAS, USCs home stadium, the iconic Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, opened in 1923 and is set to begin renovations after the 2017 season to be ready by 2019; now, therefore, be itResolved by the Senate of the State of California, That the Senate commemorates the University of Southern Californias recent Rose Bowl victory and recognizes the University of Southern Californias accomplishment in building an outstanding college football program; and be it furtherResolved, That the Secretary of the Senate transmit copies of this resolution to the author for appropriate distribution.
