The measure would request the Department of Transportation to determine the cost of appropriate signs showing this special designation and, upon receiving donations from nonstate sources covering that cost, to erect those signs.Digest Key Fiscal Committee: YES Bill TextWHEREAS, Darnell Andrew Calhoun was born on June 24, 1992, to Lonnie Darnell and Renee Calhoun, in the City of Pomona; andWHEREAS, Darnell was the oldest brother of three children; and WHEREAS, Darnell was homeschooled through high school and attended the California State University, San Marcos, where he received his bachelors degree in criminology and justice studies; andWHEREAS, Darnell was joined in holy matrimony to his wife, Vanessa Nichele Quinn, on March 26, 2017; and WHEREAS, Darnell and Vanessa had two beautiful children and one on the way before his passing: Russel Russell Jay, Troy Ezekiel, and a baby boy to be named Malcolm; andWHEREAS, Darnell worked in his early years at his family-owned restaurant in the City of Murietta before becoming a San Diego Police Officer in 2019; andWHEREAS, In February of 2022, Darnell continued his law enforcement career as a Deputy Sheriff with the Riverside County Sheriffs Department; andWHEREAS, Darnell worked patrol out of the Lake Elsinore Station; andWHEREAS, Darnell was tragically murdered on duty upon arriving at a call for service on January 13, 2023; andWHEREAS, Darnell was loved by his coworkers, by the communities he served throughout his law enforcement career, and by his beloved fellow church members at the Covenant Grace Church in the City of Menifee; andWHEREAS, Aside from his immediate family, Darnell is survived by his parents and extended family members; now, therefore, be itResolved by the Senate of the State of California, the Assembly thereof concurring, That the Legislature hereby designates the portion of State Highway Route 15 from Central Avenue to N. Main Street in the City of Lake Elsinore and the County of Riverside as the Deputy Darnell Andrew Calhoun Memorial Highway; and be it furtherResolved, That the Department of Transportation is requested to determine the cost of appropriate signs consistent with the signing requirements for the state highway system showing this special designation and, upon receiving donations from nonstate sources sufficient to cover the cost, to erect those signs; and be it furtherResolved, That the Secretary of the Senate transmit copies of this resolution to the Director of Transportation and to the author for appropriate distribution.
