Digest KeyBill TextWHEREAS, 1,000,000 people worldwide and an estimated 50,000 Americans, including approximately 6,500 Californians have been diagnosed with tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC), a genetic disease with no cure; andWHEREAS, Tuberous sclerosis complex causes tumors to form in vital organs, including the brain, heart, kidneys, skin, liver, and lungs; andWHEREAS, Changes in the brain caused by TSC include seizures, developmental delays, intellectual disabilities, behavioral challenges, and autism and have a significant impact on the quality of life; andWHEREAS, Tuberous sclerosis complex is also the leading genetic cause of epilepsy; andWHEREAS, Tuberous sclerosis complex is considered a linchpin disease, meaning research into the disease holds incredible promise for breakthroughs to treat other more common diseases, such as cancer, epilepsy, and autism; andWHEREAS, Tuberous sclerosis complex affects some people severely, and affects others so mildly that it often goes undiagnosed; andWHEREAS, The incidence of TSC is as common as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrigs disease, or cystic fibrosis, so increased awareness of TSC is vital; andWHEREAS, The TSC Alliance was originally formed by four California mothers in 1974; andWHEREAS, The TSC Alliance and other groups around the world have joined together to promote awareness of TSC to ensure people with TSC get the best possible treatment and proper diagnosis; now, therefore, be itResolved by the Senate of the State of California, The Legislature does hereby proclaim May 15, 2023, as Tuberous Sclerosis Complex Awareness Day throughout California, and urges all Californians to support the search for a cure to TSC and to assist those individuals and families who struggle with this challenging disease on a daily basis; and be it furtherResolved, That the Secretary of the Senate transmit copies of this resolution to the author for appropriate distribution.
