WHEREAS, United States Army Colonel Stan Cass was born in1
Briggsdale, Colorado, on July 29, 1933; and2
WHEREAS, Stan Cass attended Briggsdale High School and3
worked on his family's farm until he graduated and applied to the United4
States Military Academy at West Point; and5
WHEREAS, He was accepted to West Point after taking classes6
at what is now Colorado State University, but at the time was known as7
the Colorado State College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts; and8

Cass was first stationed in France and Germany, but was later transferred2
to Vietnam in 1966 to command a helicopter unit in the Vietnam War;3
and4
WHEREAS, It was in Vietnam in 1972 where he met his future5
wife, Cecily, who was working for the Central Intelligence Agency at the6
time; and7
WHEREAS, They weren't able to marry until years later, after8
Cecily was transferred to Italy and Colonel Cass returned to the United9
States to work for the Pentagon, where he developed the first Hellfire10
air-to-surface missile, which is still the primary missile system used by11
United States military helicopters today; and12
WHEREAS, In 1986, Colonel Cass retired from the armed13
services so that he and Cecily could move back to Weld County to tend14
to the family farm when his father was no longer able to; and15
WHEREAS, Stan Cass, all while continuing to preserve the land16
his family had cultivated for decades, began serving his fellow veterans17
first by offering his own money to the Weld County Veterans Memorial18
when it appeared that it wouldn't be completed, and then by helping to19
form the Honor Flight Northern Colorado program in 2008; and20
WHEREAS, Honor Flight Northern Colorado, a nonprofit21
volunteer organization, flies veterans of World War II, terminally ill22
veterans, Purple Heart recipients, and veterans of the Korean and Vietnam23
Wars from all over the United States to Washington, D.C. so they can24
visit the World War II Memorial there; and25
WHEREAS, Through his passion to serve his fellow veterans, Stan26
Cass helped over 1,500 veterans make the pilgrimage to the World War27
II Memorial through the Honor Flight Northern Colorado program, which28
continues to this day; and29
WHEREAS, Stan Cass will always be remembered for his quick30
smile, his commanding presence, his military precision, and his generous31
spirit that he devoted to his family, his country, and his fellow veterans;32
now, therefore,33

-2- Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the Seventy-third1
General Assembly of the State of Colorado, the Senate concurring herein:2
(1)  That the portion of Colorado State Highway 14 in Weld3
County from Mile Marker 153 to Mile Marker 154 be designated as the4
"Colonel Stan Cass Memorial Highway".5
(2)  That the Colorado Department of Transportation may accept6
and expend gifts, grants, and donations for the purpose of the initial7
placement of signs to mark Colorado State Highway 14 in Weld County8
from Mile Marker 153 to Mile Marker 154 as the "Colonel Stan Cass9
Memorial Highway".10
(3)  That the Colorado Department of Transportation may explore11
a cooperative agreement with the Board of County Commissioners for12
Weld County for the maintenance of the signs marking the "Colonel Stan13
Cass Memorial Highway".14
Be It Further Resolved, That copies of this Joint Resolution be sent15
to the family of Stan Cass, Ault Mayor Rob Piotrowski and the Ault16
Board of Trustees, the Weld County Board of County Commissioners,17
and the West Greeley Conservation District.18
