When the letters from her son stopped arriving and2 she learned of his death, she took action in her grief and, with a group of3 mothers, established American Gold Star Mothers, Inc.; and4 WHEREAS, Since 1936, Gold Star Mother's Day has been5 honored, through presidential proclamation, as the last Sunday of each6 September; and7 WHEREAS, The acts of heroism and the stories of courage of8 fallen soldiers are forever remembered in the minds and hearts of their9 families; and10 WHEREAS, While national monuments and memorials serve as11 strong visible reminders for the service members who made the ultimate12 sacrifice in service to our nation, Gold Star Families are a living legacy13 of each fallen soldier and can help us all remember and honor these14 heroes by name; and15 WHEREAS, Long after the battles have ended, as our stars and16 stripes of liberty fly, the families who have at home a folded flag and an17 empty seat at the table deserve our respect and our support; now,18 therefore,19 Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the20 Seventy-fourth General Assembly of the State of Colorado, the Senate21 concurring herein:22 That we, the members of the Colorado General Assembly, honor23 the pride and the pain of the parents, partners, children, and siblings of24 our fallen heroes and recognize the families of these proud patriots with25 an expression of profound gratitude and respect.26 Be It Further Resolved, That copies of this Joint Resolution be sent27 to the commanders of the American Legion Posts in Colorado; the28 commanders of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Posts in Colorado; the29 commanders of Colorado's active military bases; the Pikes Peak Chapter30 of American Gold Star Mothers, Inc.; the Denver Chapter of Gold Star31 Wives of America, Inc.; and the Colorado chapters of the Blue Star32 Mothers of America, Inc.33 1008 -2-
