AN ACT AUTHORIZING MUNICIPALITIES TO LEVY A LOCAL SALES TAX.

Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives in General Assembly convened:

That the general statutes be amended to (1) permit municipalities to levy a local sales tax of three-quarters of one per cent on goods and services currently subject to the sales tax, and (2) require that such local sales tax revenues be collected by the Department of Revenue Services and remitted quarterly to municipalities that have established a local sales tax, based on the following formula: fifty per cent of the local sales tax revenue shall be remitted proportionally based on each municipality's population as determined by the most recent federal decennial census and fifty per cent of the local sales tax revenue shall be remitted proportionally based on the total value of tax-exempt real property located within each municipality.

Statement of Purpose:

To provide additional revenue to municipalities and reduce reliance on local property tax revenue.
