AN ACT ALLOWING A POLICE OFFICER TO TAKE CERTAIN 
PERSONS INTO CUSTODY FOR AN EMERGENCY EXAMINATION. 
Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives in General 
Assembly convened: 
 
That section 17a-503 of the general statutes be amended to permit a 1 
police officer to take any person such officer has reasonable cause to 2 
believe suffered from an overdose of an opioid drug that necessitates 3 
emergency medical intervention, including, but not limited to, through 4 
the successful administration of an opioid antagonist to such person, 5 
into custody or to take or cause such person to be taken to a general 6 
hospital for emergency examination, provided such person is not held 7 
for more than seventy-two hours unless committed under an 8 
emergency certificate. 9 
Statement of Purpose:   
To allow a police officer to take a person into custody when the officer 
has reasonable cause to believe such person suffered from an opioid 
drug overdose that necessitates emergency medical intervention.
