LCO No. 5134 1 of 2 General Assembly Committee Bill No. 6775 January Session, 2019 LCO No. 5134 Referred to Committee on VETERANS' AFFAIRS Introduced by: (VA) AN ACT CONCERNING MILITARY-CONNECTED STUDENTS A ND PUBLIC SCHOOL ENROLL MENT. Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives in General Assembly convened: Section 1. (NEW) (Effective October 1, 2019) (a) (1) The Department of 1 Education shall, within available appropriations, develop and 2 promulgate a standardized form for reporting information identifying 3 military-connected students who are seeking to enroll in a public 4 school in this state. "Military-connected student" means any child 5 under twenty-one years of age whose parent or legal guardian is (A) a 6 current, retired or separated member of the armed forces, or (B) a 7 veteran. "Armed forces" and "veteran" have the same meanings as 8 provided in section 27-103 of the general statutes. 9 (2) Such form shall include (A) the definition of military-connected 10 student set forth in this subsection, (B) a check box to identify a child 11 seeking to enroll in a school as a military-connected student, and (C) a 12 notice that completing such form is voluntary and is not a condition 13 precedent to enrolling in such public school. 14 (3) Such form may be completed and submitted to the local or 15 Committee Bill No. 6775 LCO No. 5134 2 of 2 regional school district governing the school in which a child seeks to 16 enroll. 17 (b) Any public school in this state that enrolls a military-connected 18 student shall connect or offer to connect the family of such student 19 with existing resources available from the Department of Veterans 20 Affairs, the Military Department and qualified veterans' charitable 21 organizations. 22 This act shall take effect as follows and shall amend the following sections: Section 1 October 1, 2019 New section Statement of Purpose: To connect certain students enrolled in public schools with certain available resources.
