AN ACT CONCERNING WORKERS' COMPENSATION COVERAGE 
FOR CURRENT AND FORMER MEMBERS OF PAID MUNICIPAL OR 
VOLUNTEER FIRE DEPARTMENTS. 
Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives in General 
Assembly convened: 
 
That the general statutes be amended to make professional and 1 
volunteer firefighters who are diagnosed with cancer, acquired through 2 
their occupational exposure to toxic substances and poisonous gases, 3 
eligible for workers' compensation and other benefits, including death 4 
benefits in the event of their death due to such cancer and to make 5 
cancer a presumptive "line of duty" injury or cause of death, unless the 6 
contrary can be shown by a preponderance of the evidence. To be 7 
eligible, a firefighter shall have served for a minimum of five years, have 8 
been repeatedly exposed to indoor fires, been a nonsmoker and not have 9 
a history of cancer prior to becoming a firefighter.  10 
Statement of Purpose:   
To protect firefighters' health and secure their benefits in the event that 
they contract cancer due to their service.
