Researcher: MHF Page 1 4/29/22 OLR Bill Analysis sHB 5498 (as amended by House “A”)* AN ACT DESIGNATING VARIOUS DAYS, WEEKS AND MONTHS, A SHELTER PET AS THE STATE PET AND THE LOLLIPOP AS THE STATE CANDY. SUMMARY This bill requires the governor to annually proclaim the following: 1. the first week of May to be Tardive Dyskinesia Awareness Week, to raise public awareness of this neurological involuntary movement disorder and available treatments for it; 2. June 13 to be Albinism Awareness Day, to raise public awareness of albinism; 3. the month of June to be Women Veterans Month, in recognition of the service provided by women veterans; 4. the month of June to be Pride Month, to commemorate the events that occurred in June 1969 and recognize the legacy and contributions of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer rights movement and generations of activists who fought valiantly to promote dignity, equality, and greater visibility for the LGBTQ community; 5. the month of September to be Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month, to raise public awareness of ovarian cancer and available treatments for it; 6. the month of September to be Polycystic Ovary Syndrome Awareness Month, to raise public awareness of polycystic ovary syndrome and available treatments for it; 7. September 7 to be Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy Awareness Day, to raise public awareness of this rare genetic disease that 2022HB-05498-R01-BA.DOCX Researcher: MHF Page 2 4/29/22 causes progressive muscular degeneration and weakness and available treatments for it; 8. September 14 to be Free Enterprise Day, to recognize the contributions that free enterprise has made to the state’s economy; and 9. September 17 to be Constitution Day, to commemorate the formation and signing of the United States Constitution. Under the bill, suitable observance exercises may be held in the state capitol and elsewhere as the governor designates. The bill establishes (1) the state pet as a shelter pet and (2) the state candy as the lollipop. It also makes a technical correction. *House Amendment “A” designates the month of June as Pride month and makes technical changes. EFFECTIVE DATE: October 1, 2022, except the provisions establishing the state pet and state candy are effective upon passage.
