LCO No. 6190 1 of 2 General Assembly House Resolution No. 10 January Session, 2025 LCO No. 6190 Referred to Committee on GOVERNMENT ADMINISTRATION AND ELECTIONS Introduced by: (GAE) RESOLUTION RECOGNIZING THE CULTURE AND HERITAGE OF TAÍNO DESCENDANTS IN THIS STATE. Resolved by this House: WHEREAS, the residents of this state of Taíno heritage merit 1 recognition; and 2 WHEREAS, such residents serve a vital role in the state's diverse 3 cultural fabric; and 4 WHEREAS, the Taíno people contributed both historically and 5 culturally to this state, ensuring that their heritage is recognized and 6 preserved for future generations; and 7 WHEREAS, this House supports efforts of the Taíno people to gain 8 federal recognition while clarifying that this recognition does not confer 9 tribal status, nor establish claims to land or sovereignty within the state; 10 and 11 WHEREAS, encouraging collaboration with Taíno cultural 12 organizations will promote awareness, support educational initiatives 13 and assist in language revitalization efforts. 14 House Resolution No. 10 LCO No. 6190 2 of 2 NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that this House respects and 15 affirms the cultural identity of Taíno descendants in Connecticut, 16 ensuring that their heritage is recognized and preserved for future 17 generations while fostering a greater understanding of their historical 18 and ongoing contributions to the state. 19 [Proposed deletions are enclosed in brackets.
