OSTEN, 19th Dist. RESOLUTION CONDEMNING THE PROVISIONS OF THE TREATY OF HARTFORD OF 1638 THAT SOUGHT TO ERADICATE THE PEQUOT CULTURAL IDENTITY. Resolved by this Assembly: That this Assembly condemn the provisions of the Treaty of Hartford, 1 an agreement between the English inhabitants in Connecticut and the 2 Narragansett and Mohegan Tribes in 1638, that sought to eradicate the 3 Pequot cultural identity by prohibiting the Pequots from returning to 4 their lands, abolishing their tribal name and forcing them to assimilate 5 into the Mohegan and the Narragansett Tribes and the remaining 6 members of the Pequot Tribe to be sold into slavery or killed. 7 Statement of Purpose: To condemn the provisions of the Treaty of Hartford of 1638 that sought to eradicate the Pequot cultural identity.
