LCO 1 of 1 General Assembly Substitute Senate Joint Resolution No. 16 January Session, 2025 RESOLUTION CONDEMNING THE PROVISIONS OF THE TREATY OF HARTFORD OF 1638 THAT SOUGHT TO ERADICATE THE PEQUOT CULTURAL IDENTITY. Resolved by this Assembly: WHEREAS, the Treaty of Hartford was agreed to by the English 1 inhabitants in Connecticut on September 21, 1638, to end the Pequot 2 War; and 3 WHEREAS, said treaty sought to eradicate the Pequot cultural 4 identity by prohibiting the Pequots from returning to their lands, 5 abolishing their tribal name and forcing them to assimilate and the 6 remaining members of the Pequot Tribe to be sold into slavery or killed. 7 NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Connecticut General 8 Assembly pause in its deliberations to condemn the provisions of the 9 treaty authorizing the selling, murdering or maiming of a Native 10 American tribe and reiterate its support of the Native American tribes 11 in this state and our successful partnership with them. 12 GAE Joint Favorable Subst.
