White, Jr. 22 23 24 ___________________________ 25 Councilmember Trayon White, Sr. 26 27 28 29 A CEREMONIAL RESOLUTION 30 __________ 31 32 IN THE COUNCIL OF THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA 33 __________ 34 35 36 To recognize and honor beloved entertainer Dustin Michael Schaad AKA “Ba’Naka” on the 37 occasion of their tragic and untimely death on January 11 th , 2023. 38 39 WHEREAS, Schaad was born in Bradenton, FL in the late 1980s, and moved to the D.C. area 40 directly after graduating high school; 41 42 WHEREAS, Schaad initially worked at Universal Gear, a menswear retailer formerly located in 43 the 1600 block of 17 th Street, NW; 44 45 WHEREAS, after moving to the D.C. area, Schaad began performing as Ba’Naka at drag shows 46 around the city, eventually becoming one of the most recognizable people in the District’s drag 47 community; 48 49 WHEREAS, Ba’Naka was voted “Best Drag Queen” by the Washington Blade in 2011; 50 51 WHEREAS, through their vibrant personality and outgoing nature, Ba’Naka raised awareness 52 around issues impacting the LGBTQ+ community; 53 54 WHEREAS, Ba’Naka became a beloved regular at gay bars and clubs around the District, lifting 55 the spirit of the LGBTQ+ community; 56 57 WHEREAS, Ba’Naka was a strong advocate for the LGBTQ+ community and participated in 58 several protests and demonstrations, including the Silent March focused on anti- LGBTQ violence; 59 60 RESOLVED, BY THE COUNCIL OF THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA, that this resolution 61 may be cited as the “Dustin Michael Schaad Memorial Recognition Resolution of 2023”. 62 63 Sec. 2. The Council of the District of Columbia honors Dustin Michael Schaad’s memory, 64 recognizes and celebrates their legacy of love, unity, and compassion for all those who knew him, and 65 expresses sincere condolences to Dustin’s family and loved ones. 66 67 Sec. 3. This resolution shall take effect immediately upon the first date of publication in the 68 District of Columbia Register. 69
