To recognize the Capital Classic on its 50
th
anniversary of its high school All-American 27
basketball game in the District of Columbia. 28
WHEREAS, Capital Classic has for 50 years put on an All-American High School 29
basketball game hosted in Metropolitan Washington; 30
WHEREAS, Capital Classic showcases Metropolitan Washington’s Basketball All-31
Americans and pits them against All-Americans from around the country to showcase their skills 32
in an All-Star game; 33
WHEREAS, Capital Classic has a history of showcasing some of the best basketball 34
players of a generation with alumni including Michael Jordan, LeBron James, Magic Johnson, and 35
locals such as Patrick Ewing, Len Bias and Grant Hill; 36

WHEREAS, Capital Classic offers the High School players not only a basketball 38
experience but a chance to experience the nation’s capital with visits to the Smithsonian Museum 39
of African American History, the White House or the US Capitol; 40 WHEREAS, Capital Classic not only hosts an All-Star game but also gives back to 41
community through areas such as basketball, fitness and life skills, utilizing their notable alumni 42
as mentors and educators; 43
WHEREAS, Capital Classic this year will make the Boys and Girls Club of Washington 44
DC a recipient of their charitable endeavors; 45
WHEREAS, Capital Classic has cultivated a reputation as a respected community 46
showcase within the District of Columbia and across the country as a showcase for the best that 47
Metropolitan Washington and the rest of the country has to offer in High School basketball; and 48

WHEREAS, the 50
th
anniversary Capital Classic game will be hosted on April 29
th
this 50
year at the Events DC Entertainment and Sports Arena. 51

RESOLVED, BY THE COUNCIL OF THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA, That this 53
resolution may be cited as the “Capital Classic Recognition Resolution of 2023”. 54

Sec. 2. The Council of the District of Columbia recognizes and congratulates Capital 56
Classic on their 50
th
anniversary game and for their commitment to service and highlighting the 57
talented youth of Metropolitan Washington. 58

Sec. 3. This resolution shall take effect immediately upon the first date of publication in 60
the District of Columbia Register. 61
