White, Jr. ________________________________ Councilmember Anita Bonds A CEREMONIAL RESOLUTION 1 2 _______ 3 4 IN THE COUNCIL OF THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA 5 6 _______________ 7 8 To recognize and congratulate the Saint John’s College Boys’ Basketball team for winning the 9 Washington Catholic Athletic Conference Boys’ Basketball Championship. 10 11 WHEREAS, St. John’s College High School, established in 1851 is the second-oldest 12 Christian Brothers school in the United States; 13 14 WHEREAS, St. John’s College High School, located in northwest Washington, D.C., 15 remains a bastion of academic excellence, with 100% of St. John’s graduates accepted into 4- 16 year colleges or universities; 17 18 WHEREAS, St. John’s succeeds in preparing young people for a life dedicated to 19 leadership, achievement, and service to the community; 20 21 WHEREAS, the philanthropic efforts of St. John’s include 25,000 hours of annual 22 student Christian service; 23 24 WHEREAS, on February 27, 2023, the St. John’s College High School Boys’ Varsity 25 Basketball team, led by Head Coach Patrick Behan and Coach Patrick O’Connor, defeated Paul 26 VI by a score of 65-63 to win the 2023 Washington Catholic Athletic Conference (“WCAC”) 27 championship; 28 29 WHEREAS, the Ward 4 community is proud of the achievements of the St. John’s Boys’ 30 Basketball team; 31 2 32 WHEREAS, the St. John’s College High School Varsity Boys’ Basketball team roster for 33 the 2022-2023 season includes: 34 35 Jonathan Barton 36 Timothy Barton 37 Finley Billy 38 Zyion Chase 39 Geremy Clark 40 Daquan Davis 41 Donovan Freeman 42 Malik Mack 43 Atosh Newman 44 Marano Tanedo 45 Devin Toatley 46 Raymond Watts 47 48 WHEREAS, the St. John’s College High School Varsity Boys’ Basketball team has 49 triumphed and excelled on the court and in the classroom; 50 51 WHEREAS, Coach Behan was named WCAC Coach of the Year; 52 53 WHEREAS, in May 2022, Coach Behan was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral 54 sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, a neurodegenerative disease that affects 55 muscle control in the body; 56 57 WHEREAS, ALS occurs throughout the world with no racial, ethnic, gender, or 58 socioeconomic boundaries; and 59 60 WHEREAS, despite Coach Behan’s diagnosis, he made the courageous decision to 61 remain the head coach and continues to provide inspiration to all. 62 63 RESOLVED, BY THE COUNCIL OF THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA, That this 64 resolution may be cited as the “St. John’s College High School Boys’ Varsity Basketball Team 65 Recognition Resolution of 2023”. 66 67 Sec. 2. The Council of the District of Columbia heartily congratulates Head Coach 68 Patrick Behan and Coach Patrick O’Connor for their coaching excellence and the players of the 69 St. John’s College High School Boys’ Varsity Basketball Team for their athletic 70 accomplishment. 71 72 Sec. 3. This resolution shall take effect immediately upon the first date of publication in 73 the District of Columbia Register. 74
