McDuffie 18 19 20 A CEREMONIAL RESOLUTION 21 ______________ 22 23 IN THE COUNCIL OF THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA 24 __________________ 25 26 To recognize, honor, and thank the Ward 8 Woods Conservancy for their commitment to 27 restoring the woodland ecology, building trails, and promoting health and sustainability 28 in Ward 8 through job creation, advocacy, and community engagement. 29 30 WHEREAS, Ward 8 Woods began as the Committee to Restore Shepherd Parkway in 31 2011, founded by Phillip Pannell and Nathan Harrington, who currently serves as the Executive 32 Director of Ward 8 Woods; 33 34 WHEREAS, the Committee to Restore Shepherd Parkway brought together over 2,000 35 volunteers to clear trash and invasive vines from hundreds of trees, resulting in the National Park 36 Service developing a concept-planning process for Shepherd Parkway; 37 38 WHEREAS, the Committee to Restore Shepherd Parkway became the Ward 8 Woods 39 Conservancy in 2018; 40 41 WHEREAS, Ward 8 Woods began the Park Stewards program, committed to creating 42 jobs for Ward 8 residents with traditional barriers to employment, including returning citizens; 43 44 WHEREAS, the Ward 8 Woods Park Stewards care for over 500 acres of Ward 8 forest 45 through cleanup and monitoring of the woods and educating and engaging with the community. 46 47 WHEREAS, Ward 8 Woods has removed hundreds of tons of trash and saved thousands 48 of trees from invasive vines; 49 50 WHEREAS, Ward 8 Woods has made invaluable contributions to creating equitable 51 access to green space and supporting the holistic health and wellness of Ward 8 communities; 52 53 RESOLVED, BY THE COUNCIL OF THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA, That this 54 resolution may be cited as the “Ward 8 Woods Conservancy Recognition Resolution of 2023”. 55 56 Sec. 2. The Council of the District of Columbia recognizes, honors, and thanks the Ward 57 8 Woods Conservancy for their commitment to restoring the woodland ecology, building trails, 58 and promoting health and sustainability in Ward 8 through job creation, advocacy, and 59 community engagement. 60 61 Sec. 3. This resolution shall take effect immediately upon the first date of publication in 62 the District of Columbia Register. 63
