IN THE COUNCIL OF THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA 20

To recognize and honor Bard High School Early College DC for winning the 2023 DCIAA and 23 
DCSAA Class A championships for boys’ basketball. 24 
 25 
WHEREAS, Bard HS Early College DC defeated SEED DC, 67-64, to win the 26 
District of Columbia State Athletic Association (DCSAA) Class A boys basketball 27 
championship on Sunday, March 5, 2023;  28 
 29 
WHEREAS, four players for Bard scored in double figures in the championship 30 
game, including Nate Pondexter with 18 points and eight rebounds, Steven Lamar with 12 31 
points, and Damari Thompson with 11 points and the shot that gave his team the lead very 32 
late in the game, while Kwari Harvey had eight points and nine assists; 33 
 34 
WHEREAS, Bard defeated Banneker Academic High School, 63-60, and Idea 35 
Public Charter School, 58-53, in the DCSAA playoffs to reach the Class A title game; 36 
 37 
WHEREA, Bard defeated McKinley Technology HS, 54-44, to win the District of 38 
Columbia Interscholastic Athletic Association (DCIAA) boys basketball championship on 39 
Saturday, February 18, 2023; 40

WHEREAS, DeAngelo Fogle scored 18 points and earned the Game MVP honors; 42 
 43 
WHEREAS, Bard, seeded fifth in the DCIAA playoffs, accomplished three straight 44 
upsets to win the title, defeating fourth-seeded Anacostia High School, 69-68, and top-45 
seeded Jackson-Reed High School, 71-65, before their win against third-seeded McKinley 46  Tech; 47

WHEREAS, Bard finished the season with a 24-7 record and won its first-ever 49 
DCIAA and DCSAA boys basketball championships, respectively, in its first year in its new 50 
school in Ward 8;   51

WHEREAS, head coach and athletic director Malcolm Battle has been a successful 53 
coach and mentor in the Washington, DC community for many years, serving as the head 54 
basketball coach at Cesar Chavez Public Charter School prior to working at Bard;  55 
 56 
RESOLVED, BY THE COUNCIL OF THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA, That this 57 
resolution may be cited as the “Bard High School Early College DC DCIAA and DCSAA 58 
Basketball Championship Ceremonial Recognition Resolution of 2023”. 59 
 60 
 Sec. 2. The Council of the District of Columbia honors and celebrates the contributions of 61 
Bard High School Early College DC to the District and the surrounding Ward 8 community and 62 
congratulates them on winning the 2023 DCIAA and DCSAA Class A championships for boy’s 63 
basketball. 64

 Sec. 3. This resolution shall take effect immediately upon the first date of publication in 66 
the District of Columbia Register. 67
