A CEREMONIAL RESOLUTION  17

IN THE COUNCIL OF THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA 22

To recognize the first week of May 2023 as “	Tardive Dyskinesia Awareness Week.” 26 
 27 
WHEREAS, Many people with serious mental health conditions, such as bipolar disorder, 28 
major depression, schizophrenia, and schizoaffective disorder, or gastrointestinal disorders, 29 
including gastroparesis, nausea, and vomiting, may be treated with medications that work as 30 
dopamine receptor blocking agents (DRBAs), including antipsychotics;  31 
WHEREAS, While ongoing treatment with these medications can be necessary, prolonged 32 
use can also lead to tardive dyskinesia (TD), an involuntary movement disorder that is 33 
characterized by uncontrollable, abnormal and repetitive movements of the face, torso, and/or 34 
other body parts;  35 
WHEREAS, it is estimated that TD affects approximately 600,000 people in the U.S., and 36 
approximately 70% of people with TD have not been diagnosed, making it important to raise 37 
awareness about the symptoms and impact of TD because even mild symptoms of TD can have 38 
physical, social and emotional consequences;  39 
WHEREAS, It is important that people taking DRBA medication to be monitored for TD.  40 
Regular screening for TD in these patients is recommended by the American Psychiatric 41 
Association (APA);  42  WHEREAS, Clinical research has led to the availability of two treatments for adults with 1 
TD by the United States Food and Drug Administration; and 2 
WHEREAS, the House of Representatives can raise awareness of Tardive Dyskinesia in 3 
the public and medical community:  4 
IT IS HEREBY RESOLVED, BY THE COUNCIL OF THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA, 5 
That this resolution may be cited as the “Tardive Dyskinesia Awareness Week Recognition 6 
Resolution of 2023.” 7 
 8 
 Sec. 2. The Council of the District of Columbia hereby declares the week of May 1, 2023	-9 
May 7, 2023, as “Tardive Dyskinesia Awareness Week”, and encourages every individual in the 10 
District to become better informed about and aware of Tardive Dyskinesia. 11 
 12 
 Sec 3. This resolution shall take effect immediately upon the first date of publication in the 13 
District of Columbia Register. 14
