White, Jr. 11 12 13 _______________________________ 14 Councilmember Anita Bonds 15 16 17 18 19 A CEREMONAL RESOLUTION 20 __________ 21 22 IN THE COUNCIL OF THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA 23 __________ 24 25 To recognize and honor the life and accomplishments of Hayden Wetzel. 26 27 WHEREAS, Hayden Wetzel was born in Evansville, Indiana on May 28, 1950 and 28 graduated from Wasbash College in 1972; 29 30 WHEREAS, Hayden Wetzel is survived by his wife of 44 years, 3 children, and 4 31 grandchildren; 32 33 WHEREAS, Hayden Wetzel worked for the U.S. Department of Commerce for 31 years 34 and retired in 2004; 35 36 WHEREAS, Hayden Wetzel served as a licensed tour guide and historian for almost two 37 decades and lived in Brookland in Ward 5; 38 39 WHEREAS, Hayden Wetzel volunteered with the DC Preservation League and 40 researched historical sites for 15 landmark nominations including sites in Ward 5; 41 42 WHEREAS, Hayden Wetzel originally became interested in animal control when he 43 researched the topic for the historic preservation of the Randall Recreation Center built in 1912 44 that served as the city pound; 45 46 2 WHEREAS, Hayden Wetzel authored the book Mangy Curs and Stone Horses: Animal 47 Control in the District of Columbia From the Beginnings to About 1940 which told of how these 48 animals were treated in the District from 1971 to the early 1940s; 49 50 WHEREAS, Hayden Wetzel also authored History of the Friends Meeting of Washington: 51 The Four Chronological Histories, and Collected Other Studies and Two Studies on the History 52 of Southwest Washington, D.C. Buzzard Point, and Urban Renewal Parks; 53 54 WHEREAS, Hayden Wetzel was the campaign organizer for former Mayor Anthony 55 Williams and hosted a Q&A session at his home for Mayor Williams on the campaign trail; 56 57 WHEREAS, Hayden Wetzel was the third longest living resident on his block in 58 Brookland at the time he passed away; 59 60 WHEREAS, Hayden Wetzel passed away on June 21, 2023; and 61 62 WHEREAS, Hayden Wetzel is loved by his family, neighbors, and community, and his 63 spirit lives on in his work and advocacy for protecting DC’s historic landmarks. 64 65 RESOLVED, BY THE COUNCIL OF THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA, that this 66 resolution may be cited as the “Hayden Wetzel Posthumous Recognition Resolution of 2023”. 67 68 Sec. 2. The Council of the District of Columbia honors Hayden Wetzel for his years of 69 dedication to his community, family, and friends where he was a leader and pillar of the 70 community. 71 72 Sec. 3. This resolution shall take effect immediately upon the first date of publication in 73 the District of Columbia Register. 74
