To recognize Dr. Ellen M. Granberg for her inauguration as the 19

President of the George 31
Washington University. 32

WHEREAS, Dr. Ellen M. Granberg will officially begin her service to the George 34
Washington University as its 19
th
president on November 3, 2023; 35

WHEREAS, President Granberg will preside over an institution that has fostered deep ties 37
to communities within the D.C. metro area that have endured for more than two centuries, 38
maintaining good neighbor relations and open dialogue; 39

WHEREAS, President Granberg pledges to continue GW’s culture of public and 41
community service throughout all eight wards of the District, including building upon a record 42
602,048 hours of community service logged this past year by the GW community; 43
44 WHEREAS, President Granberg affirms that the university will continue to prioritize 45
academic excellence and support scholastic partnerships throughout the District, such as those at 46
School Without Walls, Duke Ellington School of the Arts, and MacArthur High School; 47

WHEREAS, President Granberg has already demonstrated her desire and commitment to 49
use her institution as a vehicle for social mobility, particularly within the District, and spur the 50
university’s continued growth as a world- class research institution that contributes to the strength 51
and diversity of economic, cultural , and civic life of the D.C. metropolitan area for years to 52

RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA, That this 55
resolution be cited as the “George Washington University President Dr. Ellen M. Granberg 56
Inaugural Recognition Resolution of 2023.” 57

Sec. 2. The Council and District of Columbia welcomes President Granberg and her family 59
into our community and embraces her desire to contribute to the people and institutions 60
throughout the D.C. metro area. 61

Sec. 3. This resolution shall take effect immediately upon the first date of publication in the 63
District of Columbia Register. 64
