Fauntroy , on the occasion of his death on October 3, 28 2023. 29 30 WHEREAS, on March 26, 1926, William T. Fauntroy was born in the District of 31 Columbia; 32 33 WHEREAS, Mr. Fauntroy attended numerous District of Columbia Public Schools in his 34 youth, including John F. Cooke Elementary School, the Grimke Elementary School and Garnet-35 Patterson Junior High School; 36 37 WHEREAS, Mr. Fauntroy matriculated through Howard University, earning a Bachelor’s 38 degree in civil engineering; 39 40 WHEREAS, Mr. Fauntroy served in Army Air Corps, completing basic training at Keesler 41 Field in Mississippi during the early 1940s; 42 43 WHEREAS, after completing basic training, he was assigned to Tuskegee Army Air 44 Field for training as a single engine pilot and was discharged an aviation cadet on November 8, 45 1945. 46 2 WHEREAS, in 1961, Mr. Fauntroy became the first African -American civil engineer 47 hired by the National Capital Transportation Authority (NTCA), which later became the 48 Washington Metropolitan Area Transportation Authority (WMATA); 49 50 WHEREAS, worked with WMATA until his retirement in 1984, and his tenure is 51 memorialized in the William T. Fauntroy WMATA collection that dates from 1962 to 2001 and 52 is featured at the Smithsonian Anacostia Community Museum; 53 54 WHEREAS, Mr. Fauntroy, the older brother of former D.C. delegate to the U.S. Congress, 55 Rev. Walter Fauntroy, was married to his college sweetheart , Camilla Fauntroy, for over 61 56 years before her passing; 57 58 WHEREAS, at age 9 7, Mr. Fauntroy departed from this earthly existence in late 59 September, 2023. 60 61 RESOLVED, BY THE COUNCIL OF THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA, that this 62 resolution may be cited as the “William T. Fauntroy, Jr. Memorial Recognition Resolution of 63 2023.” 64 65 Sec. 2 The Council of the District of Columbia recognizes and honors the incredible life of 66 William T. Fauntroy, Jr. for his service to his nation and the District. His amazing journey as a 67 Tuskegee Airman and groundbreaking engineer inspired many throughout the nation. 68 69 Sec. 3. This resolution shall take effect immediately upon the first date of publication in 70 the District of Columbia Register. 71
