White, Jr. Councilmember Matthew Frumin 8 9 10 11 12 13 A CEREMONIAL RESOLUTION 14 __________ 15 16 IN THE COUNCIL OF THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA 17 __________ 18 19 20 To recognize and commemorate the Institute of Gerontology at the University of the 21 District of Columbia on 44 years of service to the senior citizen community in the District. 22 23 WHEREAS, the Institute of Gerontology at the University of the District of Columbia 24 has been a beacon of service, knowledge and support for our senior community for 44 years; 25 26 WHEREAS, the Institute of Gerontology has played a pivotal role in advancing the well-27 being of the urban elderly by introducing a plethora of different programs to meet their needs; 28 29 WHEREAS, the Institute of Gerontology has been a cornerstone of volunteerism, 30 recruiting and training thousands of senior volunteers who have provided invaluable 31 companionship, assistance with errands, and essential services to their fellow seniors in the 32 District of Columbia; 33 34 WHEREAS, the Senior Companion and Respite Aide volunteer program has successfully 35 improved the lives of seniors, with dedicated volunteers offering over 87,000 hours of 36 community service in 2023 alone, contributing to the overall health and vitality of the 37 community; 38 39 WHEREAS, the Institute of Gerontology has extended its reach to diverse communities 40 showcasing a commitment to inclusivity and cultural diversity; 41 42 WHEREAS, the Senior Tuition Program, established since 1978, has demonstrated a 43 commitment to lifelong learning by offering free tuition to DC residents encouraging seniors to 44 continue their education; 45 46 2 WHEREAS, the Institute of Gerontology has pioneered programs such as the Body Wise 47 Senior Exercise Program, providing cost-free exercise programs and health-related initiatives to 48 DC seniors promoting wellness, fitness, and prevention knowledge. 49 50 RESOLVED, BY THE COUNCIL OF THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA, that this 51 resolution may be cited as the “UDC Institute of Gerontology Recognition Resolution of 2024.” 52 53 Sec. 2. The Council of the District of Columbia hereby honors and recognizes the 54 Institute of Gerontology at the University of the District of Columbia for the dedication of their 55 volunteers to enhancing the quality of life for the elderly and promoting a culture of community 56 service and lifelong learning for the past 44 years. 57 58 Sec. 3. This resolution shall take effect immediately upon the first date of publication in 59 the District of Columbia Register. 60
